B90x

Yes, I am doing the B90x. What is that, you ask? Well, let me tell you. Back in August, I heard that Steven Furtick at Elevation Church had challenged some people to read through the WHOLE BIBLE with him in 90 days.

They call their program the B90x. Here’s the description:

“B90X is a revolutionary system of intense, truth-absorbing, brain-busting Bible reading that will transform your understanding of Scripture from intro to nitro in just 90 days! Your personal trainer, Ruach “The Breath” Yahweh, will drag you through the most intense infusion of His vision that you have ever experienced and you won’t believe the results!”

Ha. Crazy, right? So crazy that I thought I’d give it a shot. The fastest I’ve ever read through the Bible before now is probably nine months–and it’s been a long time since I did that. Lately, my pattern has been to read smaller chunks more slowly.

So I’m breaking out of that pattern by trying out the B90x. I’m a month and a half in–halfway! It takes reading fifteen or so chapters a day, which really doesn’t take as long as you might think.

I am seeing some cool results:

I love getting back in touch with the grand sweep of the STORY God’s telling through the whole biblical narrative. It’s not just a collection of smaller stories and teachings, after all. There’s a bigger Story (and Author) underneath it all. I’m more in tune with that now than I have been for a while.

I’m making connections that I haven’t made before. It’s much easier to connect story B with story A when I’ve read story A recently. Reading chapter after chapter in rapid succession means that I have more of the biblical happenings fresh in my memory and more easily retrievable for making connections.

One of the reasons the P90x workout is apparently effective is because of “muscle confusion.” The workout switches you to a different set of exercises before your body plateaus (having become accustomed to the old set). I think my current B90x biblical workout is having some of the same effect–throwing me into spiritual muscle confusion, as it were. Switching exercises has blasted me off a plateau and into a new season of growth.

Question:

If you’re a Bible-reading type, what have you done lately to blast yourself out of a Bible-reading rut (or to keep yourself from falling into one)?

P.S. If you’d like to try out the B90x, you can download a PDF here. Let me know if you give it a shot–and tell me what you think!
