spring (a poem)

spring
is not an easy
season
or at least
not as it begins

the sky
sheds more light
now
you can venture out
from your hiding place

more warmth
now
it melts lingering snow
to show
the destruction
of winter and its end

set out then
find the trail markers
and set out
to see where the path has
been erased
find the places
where heavy snow
rising waters
avalanche

where winter’s strength
has cracked a branch
or snapped in two
tree after tree
after
tree

you can see
now that spring has come
you can see
the broken places

notice here
for instance
the need to step
over this fallen branch
here pick your way
through this unsteady
tumble of rocks

and here
around this bend
the trail so blocked
by splintered trees

to clear the way
you will need
the help of friends
you will need help
if you hope to walk
this trail
again
